My sugars were a little unstable during my pregnancy. My rainbow baby doll was a summer baby in Florida. I had a need for frozen sweetness without much sugar. And now that I am trying to lose that baby weight, that quest continues. I thought that I would take a few paragraphs to introduce you to some ice cream alternatives that meet my taste standards but do not kill my diet – or rather the lifestyle choices I am implementing. I also require no artificial sweeteners. I try not to ingest iffy science experiments. No weird ingredients that I cannot pronounce for me. Here are three ice cream alternatives that fit the bill:
1. Blended Frozen Bananas
My Vita-mix makes the healthiest choice in the ice cream alternative department! I freeze peeled bananas in slices, so they are available when my kids pull out ice cream. I toss them in the blender with a splash of almond milk if I need a little creaminess. For variety I add a Tablespoon of cocoa powder or a few frozen strawberries. Pure fruit disguised as ice cream – little spoonfuls of healthy heaven. They are also the best value!
2. Yasso Greek Frozen Yogurt Bars
At 100 calories with 5 grams of protein these little bars taste so satisfying. Maybe it is the greek yogurt that makes it better than the average frozen yogurt bar. I recommend Mint Chocolate Chip and Cookie Dough flavors. They come in a four pack and cost about $1 per bar on average.
3. Arctic Zone Fit Frozen Desserts
I have one flavor I like here. Cherry Chocolate Chunk. I have not tasted them all, but when I picked up Chocolate Peanut butter, I was so disappointed. It tasted like neither. But Cherry Chocolate Chunk delivered on tartly sweet cherries in vanilla “ice cream” with plentiful and quality dark chocolate chips. It fits the bill in the guiltless category with 3 grams of protein and 75 calories, though that serving size was small for my liking. It is also the priciest option unless you can stretch that little pint out for four servings. Good luck with that. I sure can’t.
I have heard Halo is a nice ice cream alternative. I am certainly willing to go the extra mile for all of you out there and give it a taste test. What are your favorite ways to have ice cream on a diet?

October 5, 2017I love the blended banana idea! I’ve also heard avocados work well blended but you have to add a sweetener. Halo top is really good, but they have barely any mix-ins. And I have personally found Arctic zone, at least the rest of the flavors are kind of gross.

October 6, 2017Yes! Avocados are great with coconut sugar as a low glycemic sweetner. I had avocado ice cream at one of those nitrogen ice cream places the other day. Not bad! I don’t think they skimped on sugar, though.
