Halloween October Classical Music Playlist

If you are anything like us, we do not like the scary, creepy things on display on October 31st. As a family of dedicated thespians we DO like to dress up. And we are big fans of candy. And pumpkins: pumpkin muffins, pumpkin bread, pumpkin donuts, etc. Those funny, roundish blobs of bright orange happiness are worth having around to make you smile. And ya’ll know I am the classical music lady, always looking for an opportunity to introduce kids to classical music. So in the spirit of fun and celebration of all things orange (one of my very favorite colors) I have compiled an only a little scary (mostly very dramatic) October classical music playlist for your family enjoyment! Please sword fight and gallop, fly, or sneak through the house to the beat!

My Top Seven

  1. The “haunted house” classic: Toccata and Fugue in d minor by J. S. Bach. Full-on organ music at its coolest. Serve a treat while listening.
  2. If that was too scary, try a jazz classic: Great Pumpkin Waltz by Vince Guaraldi Trio. Straight outta the Charlie Brown classic. Search for the Great Pumpkin while you listen!
  3. Die Walkure, Act III: Ride of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner. This one requires flying, preferably on magic horses.
  4. Requiem in d minor by W. A. Mozart. It’s all good, but Lachrimosa, Confutatis, and Dies Irae provide the most drama for your listening time.
  5. Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky. You might recognize this iconic piece from Fantasia and The Wizard of Oz.
  6. Peer Gynt: Act II, 7, In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg. This is a slow motion chase that escalates quickly!
  7. Carmina Burana – O Fortuna by Carl Orff. The most dramatic and beautiful of choral music, you might recognize it from Lords of the Rings!

I hope you enjoy my October music – perfect for any dramatic occasion! Blast it – your neighbors will LOVE it. And if they don’t, they have no taste.
